United Food & Commercial Workers

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) only officially began in 1979. It was formed by a series of mergers of smaller, more specific unions in the early 1900s. Over the years, this union has merged with unions representing industries far outside UFCW’s original food and retail focus, industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, chemicals, textiles and even insurance.

UFCW has a history of corruption charges, strikes and high-profile failed attempts at unionization. It all adds up to a significant loss of membership and power – which may make you wonder if this is the group of people you want representing your interests.
