About Teamsters
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT or Teamsters) international union is originally a trucking union, based in Washington, DC and is made up of hundreds of local unions across North America.
Teamsters members are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of IBT’s constitution and local bylaws.
At least some Teamsters members aren’t happy with the union’s representation, more than 5,000 unfair labor practice charges have been filed against the Teamsters since 2014 – an average of 513 per year, according to Bloomberg Law.
Teamsters Local 89 is located in Louisville, KY and reports to have members in Kentucky and Southern Indiana trucking, shipping and logistics, warehousing, gaming, grocery and more. The union does not report having experience in healthcare, or mention having members in Ohio on its website.
Teamsters Local 89 Dues
In states like Ohio (unlike Kentucky) that do not have a Right-to-Work law, unions legally can – and generally do – negotiate “Union Security” language into their labor contracts. This language requires employees to pay dues/fees just to keep their jobs.
According to Teamsters Local 89 most recent financial filing (2023) with the federal government, called an LM-2 report, file number 020-926, the union charges members union dues between $2.25-$2.50 per hour, up to a maximum of $107 per month. This could add up to as much as $1,284 per year.
Teamsters Local 89 also reports initiation fees between $5 to $100 for new members. The union could waive that fee for employees in the bargaining unit at the time of the election. But it would likely expect new or returning employees to pay the initiation fee.
